Shindesu: An Interview with a professional makeup artist of Hollywood & Bollywood Industry

Shindesu

1.Tell us something about yourself and your company

Shindesu or you can call me Shin, I’m a professional hair and makeup artist based in Dubai with over 20 years of international experience in the industry, in this time I’ve worked with award-winning photographers, global couture designers, top models as well as celebrities.

I have worked with the likes of Demi Moore, Nayomi Watts, Eva Longoria, Nichole Scherzinger, Leona Lewis in Hollywood, and from Aishwariya Rai to Anushka Sharma, Katrina Kaif and Rani Mukerji to name a few in Bollywood.

The art of hair and makeup is the biggest passion of mine, hence starting up my hair and makeup company that now caters to a wide range of clients from top photoshoots to exquisite lavish brides to film shoots.

2. What’s your competitive advantage and why can’t it be copied?

I would say attention to detail and my patience;
I can achieve perfection by understanding different features and faces and discussing my client’s thoughts and imagination to get the best possible outcome.

3. What challenges/obstacles did you face in your journey so far?

Well, I lead the hair team in Delhi couture week for over a decade now, except for this year that everything got held or canceled due to the pandemic, I work with designers like Sabyasachi, Tarun Tahiliani and Manish Malhotra who always have showstoppers such as Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai who are all very glamorous and well established leading ladies.

So, when you have great designers, great faces, and such a big platform to showcase your art all at once, it can sometimes get rather overwhelming but I always see this challenge as bringing better and more innovative ideas to my art, which in the end always has paid off.

4. What are your expansion plans?

I have a lot of requests for Bridal work in India and that’s something I always wanted to expand on while leading India fashion weeks, as that keeps me up to date with all the latest bridal trends.

But because I’m currently so swamped with fashion and editorial shoots, I haven’t fully expanded on the idea of the future yet.

5. Tell our audience more about your failures? How should one bounce back?

Although I have not had a major failure experience in my work I do recall an episode with my first Bridal makeup that was over 15 years ago and I had just started experimenting with contouring, I’d say I didn’t quite like that look, to say the least, and it was on my mind for the longest time.

But now that I look back, that experience made me realize how strongly I feel about certain makeup looks and that ended up being a step further towards perfecting my art; so now I try to make very cautious but definitive decisions about my looks and my work to reduce any setback or failure that might come ones way.

6. How do you define success?

Success is feeling, and I often like this feeling shared!

Making people feel stunning, beautiful and the best version of themselves, and then getting to see that satisfying look of happiness in their eyes, that is what success is all about; and just knowing you have added value to someone’s life by making their special day even more special is truly a marvelous feeling.

7. Please share with us some of the challenges you faced in your journey.

Every new face I work on is a challenge; let me give you an example, the word “simple make-up”
simple makeup means very difficult for every person because of everyone’s unique features, backgrounds, and mindsets.

For that reason, I must be able to connect with that person’s understanding of “simple” to be able to achieve the look, which is really the essence of what makes my job very exciting and challenging at times.

So, you can imagine what different Bridal makeup can mean to different brides or different persons and it’s my pleasure to expand on that and create their most unique look.

Shindesu

8. What would advice to someone starting up and particularly to women entrepreneurs?

I would say first and foremost believe in yourself, make a plan, and dedicate yourself to it.
I’ve learned dedication is a key factor for becoming successful and do not give up on your passion.
