1. What has your journey into the world of television and acting been like? Have you always wanted to have a career as an actor?

Aajay Mehra: I would like to say that the entire journey of my life has been extremely beautiful. I was born in a small agricultural household in Sonipat, which is a small town in Haryana. I actually left Sonipat and came to Mumbai nineteen years ago without telling my family. I wanted to come to Mumbai and learn more about acting and TV, and I knew my family wouldn’t allow me to make such a big change.

That is why I took a huge gamble and came down to Mumbai. After fourteen days of arriving in the city, I finally called my family up and told them that I had come to Mumbai to study. First, I used to work at Barista, CCD, ICICI Bank, Shoppers Stop, etc. and then I had behind-the-scenes and production work in well-known shows like Indian Idol and KBC with Shah Rukh Khan. I started working as a full-fledged actor from 2008-09 onwards.

For one-and-a-half months, I worked as an actor in a theatrical production directed by Jemini Pathak. I was also regularly attending auditions, and in 2012, I finally managed to bag a small role in Bindaas Love Lockup. I also got a part in a Sunsilk advertisement, where I got to work alongside Priyanka Chopra and Jawed Habib.

Staying away from my family and struggling in the competitive environment of Mumbai was really difficult, but I was always at my happiest when I was working. My first proper “break” was a cameo role in the megaserial Kasam, after which I was offered a main antagonist’s role in the popular Zee TV serial called Zindagi Ki Mehek, where I played parallel lead along with Anchal Khurana.

2. Which has been one of the most defining moments of your life/acting career?

Aajay Mehra: I would say that the most defining moment of my life was when I was back in 6th grade, and I had just realized that I wanted to grow up and become an actor. I used to watch Govinda and Amitabh Bacchan on TV, and I used to part my hair and try to impersonate my heroes.

As I grew up, I started to realize that I also had a pretty good memory and sound fashion sense at the same time. I wasn’t that good at academics, but I had a creative spark and I decided to nurture that for the future.

3. What are your strengths as an actor?

Aajay Mehra: Actually, my strengths as a human being enable me to become a better actor, and so on. I am interested in a variety of subjects – such as politics, history and literature. So I am always learning more about these things. One of my biggest interests in yoga – I love practising yoga regularly and I also love learning more about it every day. I also play sports regularly with the actors’ club.

4. What have you learnt from your directors?

Aajay Mehra: Unfortunately, if you work in television, you do not get to learn a lot from your directors. Although I will forever be indebted to the TV industry for my first big break, I cannot say that I learned very much from my stint in TV. Television will always continue to be my first love. I had fabulous relationships with Mr Jaiswal and Mr Modi, who were two of my favourite directors while I was working with TV.

I guess you can say that Mr Modi was basically my guru, and he taught me a lot of the things that I know today. He is a really wonderful person – he is highly spiritual and organized. I also look up to directors like Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Mahesh Bhatt, Guru Dutt and Ram Gopal Verma.

One director I look up to greatly is Shekhar Kapur, and I would love to get the opportunity to work with him someday. Some of the new-age directors who are coming up these days are also quite superb and extremely talented. On my upcoming web series on Zee 5, I worked with a Hollywood-based director for the first time. His professionalism and work ethic were very inspirational, and I managed to learn a lot from him.

5. Tell us more about the new role and character that you are playing in the Zee 5 web series, and tell us a little about the series as well.

Aajay Mehra: The name of our web series is State of Siege: 26/11, which is going to be all about the horrible 2008 terror attack on the Taj Hotel in Mumbai. In it, I am playing the role of a military officer called Major Veer Satish. In the course of preparing for this role, I actually got to meet Colonel Sandeep Sen, who trained us at camp for three whole days.

He actually had an instrumental part to play in the counter-operations launched against the terrorists at the Taj on 26/11. Our training was very hands-on, and we learnt to handle real-world weaponry, including automatic weapons and handguns.

I also got to learn more about the character I am playing, who was originally a qualified engineer who shifted to the armed forces by choice. Actually, he was the first person to enter Nariman House and shoot the terrorist called Akbar. A little after this training session, some big names also joined the cast. I am very grateful for the opportunity to play this role, and I can do it all over again if I was given the faintest opportunity.

6. What are the obstacles that you have faced during the course of your journey as an actor and performer?

Aajay Mehra: Actually, I am a very optimistic person in general and I do not like to dwell on the negative things in life. For example, the basic insecurities regarding the financial situation, health, job security, etc. happen to everyone in the world. I am actually a little stubborn about things like these. If someone tries to persuade me and tell me that I have problems, then I’ll probably refuse to believe them.

However, I should mention that I haven’t been able to fall in love yet. Quite a few people did love me but I never managed to love them back. At least I can say that I didn’t fake my feelings. Sometimes I think I should’ve fallen in love.

7. Do you have any person who supported you during tough times?

Aajay Mehra: Not In rough time only, but in my entire life since I born, there is person who has been always inspired me, my grandfather- late Kailash Chandra Mehra ( K.C Mehra) .He was a living Lion .. I strongly believe that He is Me &..I am Him..

See, I am nothing but an average-looking guy from a small town in Haryana who somehow managed to catch a break. I am nothing if not supremely fortunate. All I did was believe in the universe and keep on working hard towards my goals. So, I really haven’t had any special person whom I can single out and name as a support. You can say I supported myself.

8. If there is ever a biopic about you, who would you choose to play your part in the film?

Aajay Mehra: The first name that comes into my mind is probably Manoj Bajapyee. Apart from him, other artists include KK Menon, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Emraan Haashmi and Farhaan Akhtar. Watching the great actor Lt. Irrfan Khan play me on screen would have been a dream-come-true, but sadly that is not possible for us anymore, as he has left us for heavenly abode.

9. Who have been your biggest celebrity crushes?

Aajay Mehra: Earlier, I was a huge fan of Smita Patil, with her dusky complexion and her elegant beauty. I was also a huge fan of Waheeda Rehman, Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Sushmita Sen, Bipasha Basu and Sameera Reddy. Right now, I would say that my biggest celebrity crush would be Vidya Balan.

10. Do you have any special message for your fans?

Aajay Mehra: I am incredibly grateful to my fans for showering me with their love, support, time and blessings. I am very active on Facebook and Instagram, and I am always trying to connect with my fans on social media. I might not always be able to connect to each fan individually, but they should always know that I will be eternally grateful for their love.

It is because of them that I am surviving, and their support and love means a lot to me. Thank you very much for everything. I would request that you give me time and wait for me even if I am not available for a few days.

11. What are your future plans?

Aajay Mehra: I like to stay in the present, so I do not do a lot of thinking about the future. So, my only plan is to stay strong and healthy – both mentally and physically. I would want to inhale and exhale in the present. I also want to continue with the work I am doing, and if I can, I would like to work in Hollywood once.
